Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, upon arriving in the Russian city of Kazan for the Russia-ASEAN anniversary summit, held a meeting with Rustam Minnikhanov, head of the Republic of Tatarstan, to discuss expanded cooperation in the oil and gas sector and other areas.
"We see broad opportunities for cooperation in the oil and gas industry, including refining, petrochemicals, and other downstream activities," Anwar wrote on X.
The Malaysian prime minister said that they discussed prospects for cooperation in trade, investment, education, tourism, the halal industry, technology, and personnel training, with particular attention paid to the energy sector. He added that Tatarstan is one of Russia's largest oil-producing regions.
The two also discussed the role of the KazanForum in strengthening business ties and developing cooperation in innovation, the digital economy, and strategic investment.
Anwar also congratulated Kazan on being named the Cultural Capital of the Islamic World 2026 by the Islamic Organisation for Education, Science and Culture, calling it a reflection of the city's role as a center for Islamic science, culture, and innovation.
He also praised the Russia-Islamic World Strategic Vision Group, initiated by Russian President President Vladimir Putin, as an important bridge for dialogue and practical cooperation between Russia and Muslim countries.
The anniversary summit marking 35 years of relations between Russia and ASEAN will be held in Kazan on June 17-19. A Russia-ASEAN business forum will take place on the summit's sidelines on June 17. RIA Novosti is the forum's information partner.
Putin will hold a series of bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the Russia-ASEAN summit, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.
