An Indian crew member was killed and 10 Indians were injured after Iranian cruise missiles targetted Emirati tankers Mombasa and Al Bahiyah at the Strait of Hormuz on Monday, the Indian government said. Since last week, the US forces have resumed military hostilities against Iran in the wake of attacks on commercial vessels.
India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) summoned Iranian Deputy Chief of Mission (DCM) Mohammad Javad Hosseini at the Delhi headquarters on Tuesday morning after the killing of an Indian seafarer in an Iranian ballistic missile attack, Indian officials have said.
The MEA registered a "strong protest", over these attacks, while describing the incidents as "deeply concerning", and called for "immediate cessation of hostilities".

“We strongly condemn these attacks and acts of violence targeting seafarers and disrupting free and safe navigation through international waterways like the Strait of Hormuz”, MEA said in its statement.

“In particular, the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must cease in order that free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways in the region, in keeping with international law, can be restored at the earliest.”

Further, the statement informed that both the vessels were carrying 30 Indian seafarers among the combined crew of 46 members.

“Of the 12 Indian nationals onboard MT Al Bahiyah, one has tragically lost his life and another has been injured. Of the 18 Indian nationals onboard MT Mombasa, nine have sustained injuries, including two who are reported to be seriously injured,” the Indian statement said.

The Indian mission and posts in the UAE were in close touch with the Emirati authorities to render all possible assistance to the affected Indian sailors, it read.
Earlier, MEA slammed the attack on Cyprus-flagged vessel GFS Galaxy, which had 11 Indian crew members aboard. Ten of the Indian nationals were rescued while one is missing.
In June, India had summoned US Charge d'Affaires (CdA) twice in 48 hours after deadly US attacks against three Indian vessels, including MT Settebello, which killed three Indian mariners. In April, Delhi had summoned the Iranian Ambassador over attacks on Indian-crewed vessels.
On Monday, US CENTCOM forces launched attacks against Iranian military targets for the fifth consecutive day. In five hours, US forces struck Iranian coastal defences, missile and drone sites and maritime capabilities in Bushehr, Chabahar, Jask, Konark, Abu Musa and Bandar Abbas, according to CENTCOM.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) reportedly targeted a US base in Jordan following a spate of strikes on US bases across the Middle East.
As far as navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is concerned, the IRGC said on Monday that the Strait has been closed down due to violation of a clause in the Iran-US MoU signed on 17 June. Commercial transit through the Strait of Hormuz was "unfeasible" at the time, the Persian Gulf Strait Authority (PGSA) posted on X.
Meanwhile, President Donald Trump announced on Monday that the US forces were reinstating the "Iranian blockade", adding that the Iran-US MoU was effectively over.
However, the US and Iran continue to remain engaged in talks to diffuse escalated tensions.
