India's public-sector aviation behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) hopes to increase production of the country's fighter jet, the LCA Tejas Mk1A, to 30 annually, the company's Chairman and Managing Director Kota Ravi has said.The intended uptick comes despite delays in receiving the Tejas' engines from American defence giant GE Aerospace, which reportedly hasn't lived up to its delivery timelines, leading to repeated delays in the production of India's 4.5-generation jet.This has resulted in a logjam, with HAL facing heat from the IAF for not meeting its deadlines and leaving India short of critical aircraft at a time of heightened tensions with Pakistan.Nonetheless, Ravi underlined that while there were challenges in receiving engines from the US supplier in the past, GE Aerospace has assured HAL that it will supply at least 20 engines this year.

The Indian Air Force's (IAF) fighter squadron numbers have declined to 30, meaning the projected uptick in production comes as a big boost to its operational readiness.
India's public-sector aviation behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) hopes to increase production of the country's fighter jet, the LCA Tejas Mk1A, to 30 annually, the company's Chairman and Managing Director Kota Ravi has said.
"It was very important to increase the production capacity, and so the Nashik production line of LCA Tejas has started. The yearly production will be increased to 30 in the near future," Ravi told the YouTube channel Zone Victor Aerospace & Defence.
The intended uptick comes despite delays in receiving the Tejas' engines from American defence giant
GE Aerospace, which reportedly hasn't lived up to
its delivery timelines, leading to repeated delays in the production of India's 4.5-generation jet.
This has resulted in a logjam, with HAL facing heat from the IAF for not meeting its deadlines and leaving India short of critical aircraft at a time of heightened tensions with Pakistan.
Nonetheless, Ravi underlined that while there were challenges in receiving engines from the US supplier in the past, GE Aerospace has assured HAL that it will supply at least 20 engines this year.
"We had tremendous challenges in getting the engines from the supplier. Their suppliers also had difficulties in some of the components. But they have assured that all their difficulties have been resolved," HAL's top executive highlighted.
"We already have more than 20 airframes ready. Once engines come in, we just fit the engines, do the trial runs and submit the aircraft," he added.
