In their first meeting this year, India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar held wideranging talks with Chinese Foreign Minister and senior Politburo member of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Wang Yi, on the sidelines of ASEAN-ministerial meetings in Manila on Wednesday.Steps taken in normalising India-China ties in the last few months must be welcomed, Jaishankar told Wang in his opening remarks.Jaishankar noted that the ties between Asia's largest countries have been gradually normalising the since the breakthrough meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping on the margins of the BRICS Kazan Summit in October 2024, days after the two militaries agreed on a disengagement pact in a bid to resolve the eastern Ladakh standoff.Jaishankar reiterated that peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remained a "pre-requisite for normal ties".Further, Jaishankar stated that, as large countries and neighbours, India and China would have their own particular interests, adding that differences shouldn't be allowed to become disputes.The Indian foreign minister also called on Wang to address the issues of fair market access, trade balance and supply chain predictability between the two nations.In his opening remarks, Jaishankar also thanked Wang for extending support to India's BRICS presidency this year.

Such a relationship can make a valuable contribution to a multi-polar Asia and a multi-polar world," India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
In their first meeting this year, India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar held wideranging talks with Chinese Foreign Minister and senior Politburo member of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Wang Yi, on the sidelines of ASEAN-ministerial meetings in Manila on Wednesday.
Steps taken in normalising India-China ties in the last few months must be welcomed, Jaishankar told Wang in his opening remarks.
"This includes resumption of direct flights, updating of the visa regime, restarting the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra, and re-commencing border trade," Jaishankar said.
Jaishankar noted that the ties between Asia's largest countries have been
gradually normalising the since the breakthrough meeting between
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
President Xi Jinping on the margins of the
BRICS Kazan Summit in October 2024, days after the two militaries agreed on a disengagement pact in a bid to resolve the
eastern Ladakh standoff.In the context of the current global situation, Jaishankar described it as "extremely complicated".
Jaishankar reiterated that peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) remained a "pre-requisite for normal ties".
"This will continue to need our constant attention. Relevant mechanisms in this domain must be given full support and strong encouragement," he said.
Further, Jaishankar stated that, as large countries and neighbours, India and China would have their own particular interests, adding that differences shouldn't be allowed to become disputes.
The Indian foreign minister also called on Wang to address the issues of fair market access, trade balance and supply chain predictability between the two nations.
"Facilitating both official and people-to-people exchanges merit our attention. We also need to agree on the meetings of various mechanisms and platforms as per our mutual priorities." he said.
In his opening remarks, Jaishankar also thanked Wang for
extending support to India's
BRICS presidency this year.
