The 16th edition of Asia Cup, a biennial cricket tournament played among Asian countries, recently concluded at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, Sri Lanka.
Asia Cup 2023 was jointly hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka. Four matches were played in Pakistan, while nine took place in Sri Lanka.
The final match of the tournament was played between India and Sri Lanka, in which India defeated Sri Lanka by 10 wickets and emerged as the champions.
How Many Times Has India Taken Home the Asia Cup?
In the final match, India dominated over Sri Lanka, as the latter chose to bat first after winning the toss. Indian pace attack ripped apart the batting line of Sri Lanka and restricted them to a meagre total of 51 runs. The Indian team comfortably chased the target in 6.1 over without losing any wicket.
Indian fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was judged Man of the Match as he bowled his dream spell in which he took six wickets in seven overs and gave away just 21 runs.
Numerous records were broken in the final match between India and Sri Lanka on 17 September.
For example, Siraj became the first Indian bowler to bag four wickets in an over in One Day International (ODI) cricket, whereas Sri Lanka recorded the lowest-ever total in Asia Cup ODI after being all-out for 50 runs in just 15.2 overs.
Apart from this, India recorded its biggest win chasing (balls remaining) in ODI cricket, winning the match with 263 balls to spare, and its chase in 6.1 overs was the fifth-quickest in One Day Internationals.
Along with this, India also extended the record for most wins by a team against a single opposition in ODIs with its 98th win over Sri Lanka.

India’s Dominance in Asia Cup
India has been the dominant country in the biennial cricket tournament. Prior to the victory this year, the team had seven Asia Cup titles in its kitty.
The team emerged as the champion in the first edition of the tournament played in 1984 in Sharjah. No final match was held, and India was the winner via round robin format.
However, the team had to wait a long time for the fifth title, as it only came in 2010, when the opponent was again Sri Lanka.
The sixth and seventh titles came to India in 2016 and 2018, when it defeated Bangladesh on both occasions.
Sri Lanka: Second Most Successful Team in Asia Cup
Sri Lanka is the second most successful team in Asia Cup cricket history. It has six titles in its kitty.
The team won its first tile in 1986 by defeating Pakistan. In the next three finals, the Sri Lankan team couldn’t overcome the challenge posed by India in the finals. But it overpowered India in 1997 to claim its second title.
The third and fourth titles came to Sri Lanka in 2004 and 2008 respectively. It won its fifth and sixth titles in 2014 and 2022.
Pakistan Unable to Present Formidable Performance
Pakistan is one of the cricket teams that have performed extremely well in the international cricket arena, where it has defeated some of the top teams of the world. However, when it comes to the Asia Cup, it has not been able to put up a formidable performance.
The country has won the Asia Cup only twice. The first title victory for Pakistan came in 2000, when it defeated Sri Lanka in the finals, while it grabbed the cup for the second time in 2012 after winning a thrilling final match played at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Bangladesh.

Apart from India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, the other two full-time members of the Asian Cricket Council – Bangladesh and Afghanistan – have yet to win their first titles.
However, Bangladesh has reached the finals three times. But it couldn’t grab the title, whereas Afghanistan has reached the Super Four stage two times.
The next edition of the tournament will be played in 2025 in T20 format, and is seen as a preparation for the teams ahead of the T20 World Cup jointly hosted by India and Sri Lanka in February and March 2026.
