Pakistan's restive Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, widely regarded as a hotbed of terrorism in the country, has witnessed a series of militant attacks in recent months.
Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Wednesday vowed to uproot terrorism from the South Asian nation following the death of a high-ranking Army officer on Tuesday.

"Deeply saddened by the martyrdom of Brig Mustafa Burki & other soldiers. Our brave sons of the soil have laid down their lives protecting the country from the enemy forces. Terrorism will be uprooted as it is against the very idea of Pakistan. My condolences to bereaved families," Sharif tweeted.

A day earlier, the Pakistan Army's media wing, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), wrote in a statement that Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) officer Brigadier Mustafa Kamal Barki had died in a gun battle with militants in South Waziristan.
"Brigadier Barki and his team put up a valiant resistance against the terrorists during the encounter and the officer sacrificed his life for the peace of the motherland," the ISPR statement said.
Barki is the second senior ISI officer to be killed by militants this year.
