Congress Party has been in alliance with Shiv Sena (Uddhav Thackeray faction) and the Nationalist Congress Party in Maharashtra since 2019.
India's Congress Party demanded to occupy the post of leader of the opposition in Maharashtra State Assembly on Monday as it claimed to be the strongest party in the opposition with all the lawmakers intact.

Talking to media, Congress' legislature party leader Balasaheb Thorat said: “The Congress is the strongest party in the opposition. Our lawmakers are intact. We had 44 lawmakers in 2019, and we now have 45. The leader of opposition is from the opposition party with the most number of lawmakers and, accordingly, we will demand the post. We will have a meeting of the legislature party tomorrow and discuss the future course of action.”

Jolt to Opposition Unity as NCP's Ajit Pawar Joins NDA Gov’t in Maharashtra
The statement came a day after Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) politician Ajit Pawar along with eight other party lawmakers joined the Shinde-Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led state government.
Pawar took an oath as the deputy state chief while his other colleagues took their oath as ministers.
He previously held the post of leader of the opposition but was replaced by NCP-appointed Jitendra Awhad following his resignation.
In the 288-member Maharashtra state assembly, Congress currently has 45 legislators. But the NCP’s numbers have shrunk from 53 to 40 legislators after a revolt in the party.
The exact strength of the NCP at present cannot be ascertained since both sides (including the breakaway section of legislators) makes different claims of support.
And their alliance partner Shiv Sena, which had a strength of 56 lawmakers before the rebellion by Eknath Shinde last year, is now reduced to 16.
However, the Congress has reiterated that their Maha Vikas Aghadi alliance will emerge stronger from the crisis.

Probe Initiated After NCP Chief Sharad Pawar Receives Death Threat

“The Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) will emerge stronger as the people's support has turned against the Shinde-Fadnavis government because of the injustice done to the Shiv Sena and the NCP. A meeting of the MVA will take place soon,” Thorat said.

Reacting to Congress' demand, NCP chief Sharad Pawar said that it was justified.
