Canada Braces for Pro-Khalistan Rally Despite India's Demarche
14:32 04.07.2023 (Updated: 17:39 19.09.2023) Canada has allowed pro-Khalistan groups to carry out activities in recent months, with Sikh radicals targeting Hindu temples and Indian diplomatic missions in the North American country.
Ottawa on Tuesday assured the safety of Indian diplomats amid the circulating anti-India "promotional material" of pro-Khalistan groups ahead of their planned protest on July 8 in Canada.
The groups have plans to protest outside the Indian Embassy in Ottawa and diplomatic missions in Toronto and Vancouver.
"Canada takes its obligations under the Vienna Conventions regarding the safety of diplomats very seriously. Canada remains in close contact with Indian officials in light of some of the promotional material circulating online regarding a protest planned for July 8, which are unacceptable," Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly said in a statement.
"We know that the actions of a few do not speak for an entire community, or Canada," she elaborated.
Anti-India Posters in Canada
Joly's remarks came after India expressed concerns over
anti-India posters being circulated in Canada and raised the matter with the
Justin Trudeau administration by serving a demarche on
Ottawa.
The protests of July 8 are being held under the banner of
Sikhs For Justice (SFJ), a radical organization banned in the United States and India.
One of the posters being widely shared by Sikh extremists in Canada is titled "Kill India".
In the poster, the SFJ blames Indian High Commissioner
Sanjay Kumar Verma, and Apoorva Srivastava, serving as the
Consul General of India in Toronto, for the assassination of pro-Khalistan activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.
Nijjar was the chief of the Khalistan Tiger Force (KTF), a secessionist group demanding the creation of a separate homeland for Sikhs (Khalistan) in India's Punjab state. He was also the head of the Canadian arm of SFJ.
He was reportedly killed in an inter-gang fight in Vancouver on June 19.
India's premier terror investigating outfit National Investigation Agency (NIA) previously filed four cases against Nijjar, including an attempt to eliminate a Hindu priest in Punjab.
Meanwhile, as per the latest reports,
India's External Affairs Ministry has summoned the Canadian High Commissioner Cameron MacKay, lodging a strong protest over the matter.
