For months, Pakistan Army chief General Asim Munir has faced severe criticism from Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.
Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday hit out at former PM Imran Khan for running what he said was a "vile" and "sinister" campaign against the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Syed Asim Munir.

"His (Imran Khan's) trick of using the proxies to threaten the Army Chief of an assassination attempt has been badly exposed", Sharif wrote on Twitter.

"Through such highly condemnable antics, he is only exposing himself, the core of which is defined by putting his personal interest (power grab) over everything else", he added.

Sharif noted that the Pakistani people were in full support of the Army chief and the country's military and would foil any conspiracy to stain the honor and prestige of the armed forces.

Setback for Imran Khan as Court Declares Toshakhana Case Admissible
His statement comes against the backdrop of Khan's continued tirade against Pakistan's powerful Army.

The cricketer-turned-politician, who was ousted from power through a trust vote last April, has repeatedly claimed that the Pakistan Army was behind his removal from the country's top post.

Moreover, relations between Khan and Pakistan's ruling alliance and the Army deteriorated further following the incidents of May 9, when violent mobs attacked military installations after the PTI leader's arrest.

Khan was arrested in a corruption case in Islamabad. Consequently, his supporters fought pitched battles with Pakistan's security forces and ransacked public and private property.

After the events of May 9, the Pakistani authorities cracked down on Khan's political outfit, resulting in several high-profile desertions from the PTI.

However, Khan has vehemently denied allegations that his supporters carried out the May 9 violence and instead accused the present coalition headed by Sharif of conspiring against him and his party.
