Since Russia's special military operation in Ukraine began in February last year, the US and its NATO allies have sent military equipment worth billions of dollars to Ukraine and trained Kiev's forces in its proxy war with Russia.
The Pentagon on Tuesday confirmed that Ukrainian pilots have begun training on F-16 fighter jets amid growing demands from Kiev that the Vipers be delivered to it at the earliest, with Russian air superiority destroying a large portion of the country's flying force.

"As you know, Denmark and the Netherlands are taking the lead on training. We have -- and the President has given the green light to allow and support the training to move forward," Pentagon's deputy press secretary Sabrina Singh said in her daily media briefing in Washington.

However, Singh failed to specify if the US has approved a syllabus for the training of these pilots.

How Many Ukrainian Soldiers Are Training on F-16s

Though the Pentagon official failed to confirm how many Ukrainian pilots were undergoing training on the F-16 aircraft, a day earlier, an American website said that the first batch of trainees consisted of 8 persons.
The media outlet added that one of the requirements for the Ukrainians before the commencement of their F-16 training is English fluency.
That's why, the pilots who have been selected to fly the F-16 are being sent to the United Kingdom to better their English skills before they are sent for training on the fighter jets.

Why Kiev Has Sought F-16s From the West?

For long, Kiev has sought the Lockheed Martin-produced warplanes, because Ukrainian military planners allegedly believe that the F-16s could reverse the tide in their favor given that all its current fleet of combat planes is made up of Soviet-era aircraft and the Russians are well aware of their strengths and weaknesses.
Yet, there is a catch with Ukraine's usage of the F-16s. Under the provisions of the US Department of Defense's Foreign Military Sales (FMS) program, a foreign partner is not allowed to attack another country with the F-16s or for that matter any defense product which is manufactured in America.
This means that Ukraine is not permitted to deploy the F-16s for attacks on Russian territory.
While Washington has repeatedly claimed that the F-16s are being supplied to Ukraine only for "deterrence", the East European nation has launched attacks as far as Moscow through drones of late.
Although these attacks were repelled, the incidents indicate that there's no guarantee that Ukraine will not use the F-16s to launch attacks on the Russian mainland.
