The Indian embassy in Islamabad has been without an ambassador after ties between the two neighboring countries soured following New Delhi's decision to revoke the semi-autonomous status of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019.
Geetika Srivastava, an Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer of the 2005 batch, will become the first female to head the Indian mission in Pakistan.
She will take over from Dr. M. Suresh Kumar who is set to be recalled to New Delhi.
Since gaining independence from the British Raj in 1947, India has appointed a total of 22 heads of mission in Pakistan.
However, none have been women, and hence, Srivastava will become the first woman officer to be appointed as the Charge d'Affaires (CDA) in the Pakistani capital of Islamabad.
At present, Srivastava is a joint secretary in the headquarters of India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi, where she heads the division of Indo-Pacific.
Previously, she had a stint in India's embassy in Beijing from 2007 to 2009.
Also, she has served as the Director of the department of the Indian Ocean Region in MEA.
India's High Commission is currently without an Ambassador after Islamabad downgraded diplomatic ties with New Delhi following the latter's move to abrogate Article 370, which gave special rights to the Jammu and Kashmir region.
The Jammu and Kashmir region is presently separately governed in parts by India and Pakistan. But both claim it in its entirety.
