India is the fifth largest economy in the world after the US, China, Japan, and Germany at present.
India is on course to become the world's "economic powerhouse", Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Wednesday.

Modi, who has led India since 2014, vowed to transform the South Asian nation into a "global growth engine", which would give it a seat among the top three economies of the world.
"We are standing at such a phase that India will soon emerge as a global economic powerhouse. In a few years, India will be among the world's top three economies. This is Modi's guarantee," he said at a public event in Gujarat.
Interestingly, Modi's comments about the country's growing prowess in the economic arena come at a time when global financial institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) declared India a "bright spot" among large economies.

Notably, India grew at a rate of 7.2 last fiscal, surpassing forecasts of economists, who had predicted a growth of 7 percent.

The Reserve Bank of India, the country's central bank, has predicted similar figures during the 2023-24 financial year.
