Team India opened their 2023 Cricket World Cup campaign with a six-wicket triumph over five-time champions Australia in Chennai on Sunday.
On Monday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed that star opener Shubman Gill will miss the home team's World Cup fixture against Afghanistan on Wednesday.
Gill is reportedly suffering from dengue, a type of fever that lasts a little longer compared to other viral infections.
"Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be traveling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team's first fixture in the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team's next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team," the Indian Cricket Board said in a statement.
Gill did not feature in India's victory against Australia during the weekend due to the same virus. However, his services were dearly missed by the Rohit Sharme-led side, considering India lost three early wickets before the talismanic Virat Kohli and senior batter K.L. Rahul came to their rescue.
At 3/2, India was in deep trouble and had Kohli and Rahul not fought back, their campaign in the World Cup would have begun on a disastrous note.
Despite chase master Kohli and Rahul's heroics, the Indian top-order's failure against Australia put the spotlight back on Gill.
Gill has been in red-hot form throughout the year and is the highest run-getter in ODIs, having scored over 1,230 runs in only 20 games in 2023.
What's more admirable about his 2023 stats is that he has made these runs at an outstanding average of 72.35 and a stunning strike rate of 105.03.
Besides, the Punjab-born batter has smashed six centuries - the highest by any player in ODIs this year.
Gill, known for his explosive batting, is used to setting up the tempo of the Indian innings at the top with the likes of Kohli, Rahul, and Hardik Pandya taking care of the middle and the final overs.
That's why, Gill's injury has come at an inopportune time for India, especially when many cricket pundits predicted that he would emerge as the leading run-scorer in the quadrennial tournament.
"Well, look at his year. Year 2023 has been a phenomenal year for him. He's been scoring hundreds, double hundreds, across formats. Very consistent. I've actually mentioned that, he's going to be the leading scorer for this tournament," India great Zaheer Khan said on the eve of the competition.
Though the Men in Blue take on Afghanistan next in their quest to reclaim the World Cup title they have previously won twice, Gill would be needed more against arch-rivals Pakistan on Saturday.
As per the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, the match against the Babar Azam-led side is a must-win for India's hopes of qualifying for the semifinals.
And to tackle Pakistan's world-class pacers, including Shaheen Shah Afridi, Gill could prove to be a perfect foil for Team India.
The last time Gill played the Pakistan speedsters, he took them to the cleaners, denting their confidence in what was an all-out assault at the beginning of India's essay in the Asia Cup in September.
Gill's whirlwind knock left Pakistan bruised, eventually helping India to register their biggest victory over them in ODIs.
