Afghanistan Releases 473 Convicts Amid Earthquake Fears
18:32 14.10.2023 (Updated: 16:33 15.10.2023) As the dangers of an earthquake have become ever more imminent, Afghanistan has released 473 inmates from Herat prison.
The Afghan Supreme Court (SC) has ordered hundreds of prisoners to be released from Herat province's western prisons because of the possibility of earthquake dangers.
473 inmates who had completed a large portion of their sentences were released on compassionate grounds, the Supreme Court announced on 13 October.
A three-person team had been charged with touring the main prison in Herat to assess the conditions of the detainees, according to a statement from the country's highest court.
The crew conducted a two-day evaluation and found the prison building had developed cracks as a result of the recent
earthquake and was in danger of collapsing.
The delegation compiled a list of 473 inmates who had completed the majority of their sentence.
The provincial appeal court received the list after the Supreme Court gave it careful consideration and was instructed to release the detainees to relieve pressure on the detention facilities.
Several juvenile and female convicts who are eligible for remission have also been ordered by the appropriate
authorities in the south-west to be released.
The release of 473 prisoners over the previous two days was confirmed by Mohammad Nabi Khalil, director-general of the Herat jail, talking to local media.
As many as
200 convicts were freed yesterday, and 273 the day before, Khalil said.
The majority of the inmates who had less than 50 days left to serve received remissions. Another 2,000 prisoners were sent to a secure location, Khalil continued.
Days after a series of quakes in the same area killed thousands of people, a violent earthquake of similar size
rocked Afghanistan early on Wednesday.
One person was killed and at least 150 people were injured when a 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck a location 17 miles (28km) south of the regional capital of Herat.
According to UN officials on Thursday, more than 90 percent of those killed by a 6.3-magnitude earthquake in western Afghanistan last weekend were women and children.
Since last weekend, residents of more than 2,000 communities in the Herat Province, which is home to roughly 3 million people, have left their dwelling.
