Addressing an SCO meeting in Bishkek, India's foreign minister stressed the need for "robust connectivity and infrastructure to improve trade in the region".
Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar said on Thursday that the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and the India-Middle-East Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC) will become “enablers for economic prosperity” for the region.

“I am confident that that the IMMEC and INSTC could become enablers for bringing economic prosperity for the region,” Jaishankar said during his keynote address at the 22nd meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Heads of Government (CHG) at Bishkek.

The INSTC is a 7,200-kilometer multimodal network of roads, railways and maritime routes connecting Russia to Iran and India through central Asia.
On the other hand, the IMEEC envisages multimodal connectivity between India and Europe through the Middle-East. It was unveiled during the G-20 Summit in New Delhi last month.
Jaishankar also cautioned during his address that connectivity initiatives in the region should “respect sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries”, an apparent reference to Beijing-backed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).
“We should keep in mind that the Global South shouldn’t be saddled with unviable debt arising from opaque initiatives,” stated the Indian foreign minister.

India Keen to Partner with Central Asian Countries: Jaishankar

Jaishankar highlighted that India shared “deep civilizational ties” with the people of central Asia on account of a “common geographical space”.
“These historical ties should now create a template for greater economic cooperation,” he said, adding that it was vital to put the “interests” of central Asian countries at the heart of the SCO cooperation.
He said that India was “keen” to partner with SCO states to develop “sustainable, mutually beneficial and viable solutions”.
“Today, when the world is facing challenges of a looming economic recession, broken supply chains, food and energy insecurity, this calls for a closer cooperation within the SCO,” Jaishankar said.
The Beijing-headquartered SCO comprises nine member states—Russia, China, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
Iran acceded to the SCO as a full-fledged member at the virtual summit hosted by India in July. Belarus is expected to become the 10th SCO member during the ongoing presidency of Kyrgyz Republic.
