Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan chose barrister Gohar Khan as his candidate for the chairman's post in the intra-party polls, local media reported on Wednesday.The development has come days after Imran Khan was interrogated by different accountability bureau teams regarding different cases on 28 November. Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan has been Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf's (PTI) chief for over two decades since the party was formed.Khan is set to bow out and step back from pursuing the PTI chairman's position due to the challenges, the Express Tribune reported citing insiders. The incarcerated politician is already embroiled in legal battles.The development came amid speculations that Khan might be elbowed out "from the political chessboard – the so-called “minus-Imran” formula allegedly in work after he was clapped in irons".

The announcement of Khan selecting Gohar's name came late Tuesday amid a lot of confusion and a sense of conflict during discussions in the party. It also saw unprecedented cracks surfacing within PTI's leadership about who should get the reins of the slot.
