India has evacuated 1,309 of its citizens in six special flights under Operation Ajay from Israel, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has stated.
Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar informed the Lok Sabha (House of the People) on Friday that since the beginning of the conflict in the Gaza Strip on October 7, India has evacuated 1,309 of its citizens.
Jaishankar added that 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid had been delivered to Palestine by India in two instalments.

"So far, 1,309 Indian nationals have returned to India in six special flights operated under Operation Ajay from Israel and we have also facilitated the return of one Indian national from the Gaza Strip", Jaishankar responded to a question about the conflict.

The minister added that "India has provided 70 tonnes of humanitarian aid, including 16.5 tonnes of medicine and medical supplies in two tranches to the people of Palestine on 22 October and 19 November”.
The relief supplies included surgical instruments, medical equipment, tents, blankets, hygiene kits, and medications that could save lives.

Additionally, Jaishankar stated that to guarantee the safety and security of all Indian nationals residing in Israel, the Indian Embassy in Tel Aviv maintains regular contact with the Indian community as well as pertinent ministries and departments within the Israeli government.

The UN Security Council will vote on Friday to urge an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. Earlier, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres cited Article 99 of the UN Charter in a letter to the UNSC.
According to the article, "any matter which in his opinion may threaten the maintenance of international peace and security" may be brought before the council by the secretary-general.
Remarkably, the article has not been invoked by a UN secretary-general in decades. The last time it was used was in 1961 in response to a complaint made by Tunisia regarding an attack by French air and naval forces.

In the same letter, Guterres stated, "Amid constant bombardment by the Israel Defence Forces, and without shelter or the essentials to survive, I expect public order to completely break down soon due to the desperate conditions, rendering even limited humanitarian assistance impossible".
