A huge budget has been passed by the Defence Ministry to acquire a multi-barrel rocket launcher system, which would be procured by the Indian Army from indigenous sources.
The Indian Ministry of Defence has approved a budget proposal of INR 28 billion ($336 million) to buy around 6,400 rockets for the Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launcher systems, a media report said.
The report states that the Defence Acquisition Council, which falls under the Ministry of Defence, has given the green light to an acquisition proposal for two types of rockets known as Area Denial Munition Type 2 and Type 3 in a recent meeting.
It quoted defence sources saying that the rocket launcher system, which is to be procured by the Indian Army, would come from indigenous sources only.
The report said there are two main contenders here that include the Economic Explosives Limited of Solar Industries and the Munitions India Limited. The latter is one of the ammunition-producing companies in the country, created through the restructuring and corporatisation of the former Indian Ordnance Factories.

The Indian-made Pinaka weapon system, developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation is named after the bow of Lord Shiva, the Hindu God.

The weapons system, the media report said, is one of the first Indian military items which is being exported to foreign countries, including Armenia.
Larsen & Toubro, Tata Defence, and Economic Explosives Limited are private sector companies currently engaged in a defence sector project. They have established manufacturing lines for the mass production of rockets, which are being supplied in bulk to the Indian military.
The recent trials of the Pinaka rockets were conducted at the Pokharan firing ranges in Rajasthan. According to the report, multiple successful test firings were performed during these trials.
