Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Khan were fined and sentenced to seven years in prison in the Nikah case — the third unfavourable verdict against him within a week.
Following a court ruling that their 2018 marriage breached the law, former prime minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Khan were fined and given a seven-year prison sentence on Saturday.
Khawar Maneka, Bibi's initial spouse, initiated the case, contending that she boke the Islamic tradition mandating the 'Iddat period' or a mandatory pause between two marriages.
Maneka further accused his former wife and Khan of engaging in an extramarital relationship prior to their marriage, a violation that carries the penalty of death by stoning.
The Senior Civil Judge Qudratullah delivered the decision on Saturday, one day after the case's hearing was held at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi for 14 hours on Friday. Qudratullah also fined the couple Rs 500,000 ($1,800) each.

Just this week, 71-year-old Khan received a 10-year sentence in the cipher case and a 14-year sentence in the Toshakhana case.

Taken into custody on August 5 last year, Khan was apprehended upon being declared guilty in the Toshakhana corruption case filed by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). Since then, he has been held in detention, first at the Attock Jail and later transferred to the Adiala Jail.

After being convicted in the widely-reported Iddat case, Khan told court reporters that the charges against him were fabricated to "humiliate and disgrace" both himself and his spouse.

"This marks the first instance in history where a case related to Iddat has been initiated," Khan said, emphasizing that it was also the first instance of a 14-year sentence in a Toshakhana corruption case.
Ahead of Thursday's national elections, in which the former prime minister has been banned from standing, this was the third unfavourable verdict against him this week.
