India Dispatches Aid to Zambia in Response to Cholera Outbreak: Media
In response to the cholera outbreak in Zambia, India dispatched humanitarian assistance of over 3.5 tonnes via commercial cargo aircraft.
India supplied over 3.5 tonnes of aid to Zambia India on Tuesday, including medications, to assist in combating the cholera outbreak.
Authorities reported that commercial cargo planes were used to deliver the aid.
"Following an outbreak of cholera in Zambia, India today sent
humanitarian aid on commercial cargo aircraft," Indian Media cited officials.
"The aid weighing approximately 3.5 tonnes comprises water purification supplies, chlorine tablets, and hydration in the form of ORS sachets," he noted.
A surge in cholera transmission has been observed in Zambia, initially documented in October 2023, with a notable escalation since the middle of December.
The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) raised concerns about a cholera epidemic in Africa,
affecting a minimum of 10 nations, with particularly critical situations in Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Dr. Paul Ngwakum, the regional health adviser for UNICEF in East and Southern Africa, disclosed that the disease has resulted in approximately 200,000 reported cases and claimed the lives of over 3,000 individuals.

Somalia, Zambia, and Zimbabwe currently face an "acute cholera crisis."
