Pakistan Rushes to Join BRICS, Says it 'Embodies Global South'
Pakistan believes that its application to join BRICS could be considered soon, as it has good relations with many of the economic bloc's member states.
Pakistan hopes to expedite consideration of its application to join BRICS, Chairman of the Pakistani Senate's Defence Committee Mushahid Hussain Sayed told Sputnik, adding that Pakistan's presence in BRICS will strengthen the bloc.
"We are hopeful that the Russian side will have a good consideration of our application. Currently we are standing in the queue of the countries that have also applied. But given that we have good relationships with Russia and China, and we are also a member of SCO, perhaps the application could be fast-tracked. Pakistan's presence in BRICS would add strength to BRICS," Chairman, Defense Committee of the Senate of Pakistan, Mushahid Hussain Sayed, said
Sayed also said that BRICS is not only a strategic alliance but also the "embodiment of the global south".
In November 2023,
Pakistan submitted an official application to join BRICS. Islamabad also noted that it hoped for Moscow's support on this issue.
Western Countries Put Pressure on Pakistan to Condemn Russia, China
The Pakistani official went on to accuse Western countries, particularly the US, of applying "double standards" and pressuring Pakistan to criticise Russia's actions in Ukraine or China's alleged human rights abuses.
"They talk of countering Russia in Europe, because of the issue of Ukraine, and they talk of constraining China in Asia … So yes, the pressure is there — the pressure to support the West on Ukraine, or condemn China on some human rights issues, yet we do not approve of this pressure. Because a lot of countries in the West have double standards on the issues that they call out in Russia or China," Sayed said.
Neither China nor Russia have any aggressive intentions, but legitimate security concerns, he added.
