the United Nations mission in Gaza has suffered its first "international” loss after an Indian staff member was killed.The security guard with the UN humanitarian agency was killed when the vehicle he was travelling in came under attack in Rafah, where the Israeli armed forces launched a major assault last week.The victim has not yet been publicly named, but media reported that he was an Indian citizen and a former Indian army serviceman.The Indian man was working with the United Nations Department of Safety and Security (DSS). Another UN staff member was injured in the attack.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed grief over the killing of the Indian staff member and injury of another staffer.Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq said in a statement that Guterres condemned all attacks on UN personnel and called for a full investigation.He added that the UN Secretary-General had also sent his condolences to the family of the fallen staff member.Responding to questions about the incident, he said the UN wass in the process of informing the relevant governments and the relevant family members, and would share any names or nationalities.Haq also confirmed that “this is, in fact, the first international UN casualty” in the Israeli attacks on Gaza since the armed break-out from the Palestinian territory led by the armed wing of Hamas on October 7 2023.

“The UN vehicle was struck in Gaza, killing one of our colleagues & injuring another," Guterres said in a tweet. "More than 190 UN staff have been killed in Gaza. Humanitarian workers must be protected. I condemn all attacks on UN personnel and reiterate my urgent appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire & the release of all hostages.”
Deputy Spokesman for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq said in a statement that Guterres condemned all attacks on UN personnel and called for a full investigation.
