'Violence Has No Place in Politics': PM Modi Condemns Attack on Trump
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former US President Donald Trump share warm relations with the former, even hosting the latter in his home state of Gujarat during his visit to the South Asian nation in 2020.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday denounced the failed assassination attempt on former American President Donald Trump during an election rally in Pennsylvania, stating that he was left "deeply concerned" by the attack.
The Indian leader emphasized that "violence has no place in politics and democracies".
"Deeply concerned by the attack on my friend, former President Donald Trump. Strongly condemn the incident. Violence has no place in politics and democracies. Wish him speedy recovery," Modi tweeted soon after the attack on Trump.
India's top opposition leader,
Rahul Gandhi, too, joined Modi in
condemning the attack on Trump.
"I am deeply concerned by the assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump. Such acts must be condemned in the strongest possible terms. Wishing him a swift and complete recovery," Gandhi wrote on X.
The attack on Trump comes at a time when he is widely tipped to replace the incumbent Joe Biden in the White House in November's presidential polls.
The Secret Service is investigating the attack as an attempt on the Republic Party's nominee's life.
Though the bullet pierced one of his ears, Trump later
said that he was fine.
"I was shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear... I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place," he posted on social media.
Subsequently, the Secret Service revealed that Trump's suspected shooter was shot dead.
It claimed that the attacker targeted Trump from a building rooftop meters outside the site of the former President's campaign rally.
After the shooter was killed, a semi-automatic rifle was recovered
during the search operation from the scene of the crime.
