Former US President Donald Trump survived an alleged attempt on his life during an election campaign rally in Pennsylvania on Saturday.
Two geopolitical pundits have highlighted the sharp political divisions and gun culture prevalent in American society in the aftermath of the alleged assassination attempt on presidential candidate Donald Trump during the weekend.
According to international relations commentator and Indian Army veteran Lieutenant-Colonel (Retd) J.S. Sodhi, it is very unfortunate that an ex-US President and nominee for the upcoming US Presidential elections was the target of an assassination attempt.
"This yet again brings to the fore that strong Gun Control laws need to be enacted in the US soon," Sodhi told Sputnik India.
He suggested that nothing can be said of the motive of the assassin who has been killed by the US Secret Service till investigations are complete.
"I am sanguine that within a short time, the entire reasons for this assassination attempt will be made public," the retired Indian Army officer noted.
On the other hand, former Indian Ambassador and a distinguished fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation Anil Trigunayat reckoned that violence unfortunately has become quite prevalent in American society and polity.
Moreover, sharp political divisions are common, the former Indian envoy to Jordan, Libya, and Malta added.
"It is sad that a former President was attacked. Hopefully, the investigations will expose this connection, and gun laws and lobbies will behave in favor of society," Trigunayat opined.
Notably, Trump's close associate JD Vance has held the current President Joe Biden responsible for the attack on the businessman-turned-politician.
He alleged that Biden's rhetoric, declaring him an "authoritarian fascist" resulted in an attack on Trump.
"Today is not just some isolated incident. The central premise of the Biden campaign is that President Donald Trump is an authoritarian fascist who must be stopped at all costs. That rhetoric led directly to President Trump's attempted assassination," Vance said in the wake of the attack on the controversial Republican leader.
One must not forget that Trump was lucky to survive as a bullet pierced his right ear before the shooter was eliminated by the US Secret Service.
However, the attack left one person dead and two grievously injured.
