BRICS represents the Global South's stand against a US unipolar world order, with Tehran promoting this approach internationally, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali told Sputnik.
“BRICS is a protest by Global South countries against attempts to form a unipolar power structure with an American axis. In essence, BRICS stands against dictatorship on the global stage and advocates for changes in the structure of world power. The Islamic Republic of Iran is among those at the forefront of promoting this approach internationally. The presence of a country like the Islamic Republic of Iran in such an organisation (as BRICS) deepens its essence”, Jalali stated in an interview.
BRICS is an intergovernmental association established in 2006. On 1 January, 2024, Russia assumed the chairmanship of the bloc. The year began with the addition of new members – alongside Russia, Brazil, India, China, and South Africa, the group now includes Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the UAE.
Russia’s chairmanship of BRICS is focused on strengthening multilateralism for equitable global development and security. Over the course of its year-long chairmanship, Russia has planned to host over 200 political, economic, and social events.
