NATO allies' decision to allow the use of long-range missiles by Ukraine won't change the battlefield realities in any significant way, Indian analysts believe.
The Biden administration's reported go-ahead for Ukraine to use Army Tactical Missile System missiles (ATACMs) to conduct long-range strikes against Russia would mark a "major escalation" in the Ukraine conflict and possibly sabotage President-elect Donald Trump's peace plan, Indian military veterans have told Sputnik India.
Major General (retired) Shashi Bhushan Asthana, the Director of triservices think tank United Services Institution (USI) of India, described Biden's decision as "political opportunism".
"Biden has lost the election and nothing to lose from the decision, which only furthers the cause of fighting Russia till the last Ukrainian. But, what this could do, is to sabotage any peace efforts by the incoming Trump administration. If things escalate, Biden's decision could entangle the US in direct hostilities with Russia," the Indian military analyst cautioned.
Asthana warned that the brunt of the Russian reaction, if Ukraine did indeed fire long-range missiles, would have to be borne by Ukrainians, with NATO countries having nothing or little to lose.
In ceding to Volodymr Zelensky's longstanding demand, the Biden administration had "miscalculated" on two counts.
"The first one is to defy President Putin's warnings on the use of long-range weapons involving guidance of NATO personnel. They seem to be assuming that Russia won't retaliate, if Zelensky chooses to deploy these weapons," Asthana spelled out. Secondly, the use of long-range missiles wouldn't make much of a difference to the "battlefield realities", noting that Russian forces had been making steady gains in all the directions.

"We should note that Ukrainian forces suffer from manpower shortages and the only way they could reverse battlefield losses is through ground operations to change the current frontlines. The long-range missiles may cause some damage to Russian infrastructure, but as far as changing the current battlefield realities are concerned, they won't have the likely effect that Zelensky is looking for," Asthana said.

Echoing his views, Air Marshal (retired) M Matheswaran, the President of Chennai-based think tank The Peninsula Foundation (TPF), commented that Biden's decision on long-range missiles could definitely "disrupt" Trump's peace plans.

"This will definitely make things difficult for the incoming Trump administration, as pointed out by Donald Trump's son, who has warned that this could lead to World War 3," Matheswaran said.

Biden's reported decision is a "huge escalatory step" in the Ukraine conflict, as he recalled President Putin's warning in September.

"Zelensky, who's on his last legs, has been demanding permission to carry out long-range strikes on Russian targets for months now. The Kursk incursion was the last ditch, desperate attempt by Ukrainian forces to gain leverage over Russia. On part of NATO, the decision sends a message that NATO allies are entering the war in a subtle manner, as these long-range strikes won't be possible without satellite data and technical expertise from western countries," the Indian expert said.

Another possible objective would be to provice Ukraine with some "leverage" in peace talks, which would be on the cards under the Trump administration. "However, how much would Ukraine gain from this decision would ultimately depend on Russia's response," Matheswaran added.
"If the threat of use of long-range missiles is actually carried out, then Russia will have the right to respond appropriately. I believe that consequences could be disastrous for the entire world, if Russia chooses to deploy nuclear weapons. But, I believe that people who advised President Biden may believe that Russia won't resort to the use of nukes," Matheswaran concluded.
According to Western media reports, Trump's so-called "master plan" to end the Ukraine conflict involves creating a 800-mile buffer zone, which would be manned by European and British soldiers, between Russian and Ukrainian troops and putting Zelensky's plan to join NATO on hold for 20 years.
