India to Build 5 Prototypes Under 5th Gen AMCA Fighter Jet Project - MoD
In a significant move towards bolstering India's defence self-reliance, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh announced the approval to build Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA), India’s first indigenously developed 5th generation stealth fighter jet.
During the inauguration CII Annual Business Summit-2025, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said on Thursday that the development of AMCA marks a "bold and decisive decision" that would not only boost India's military strength but also propel the country's aerospace sector to new heights.
Singh informed industry leaders that the execution model for the AMCA project, approved two days ago, will involve developing five prototypes initially before moving into series production.
"This should be considered a milestone in the history of the Make in India program," he added, for the first time, the private sector will play a significant role in a major defence production program.
Success of Operation Sindoor
The Defence Minister further touched upon the success of
counter-terror Operation Sindoor, underscoring India's growing prowess in self-reliance and advanced military technology including Artificial Intelligence, Cyber Defence, Unmanned Systems, and Space-Based Security.
"Our home-grown systems surprised the world… we destroyed terrorist hideouts and then enemy military bases and airbases," he said. "We could have done a lot more, but we presented a great example of coordination of power and restraint to the world."
Singh asserted that the success of Operation Sindoor is a testament to the effectiveness of the Make in India initiative, which he described as crucial for both national security and economic prosperity.
"Make in India is an essential component of India's National Security. If we did not have this capability, India's forces would not have been able to take such effective action against terrorism from lower Pakistan to PoK," he added.
He issued a stern warning to Pakistan, saying, "Running the business of terrorism is not cost-effective; rather, it may have to pay a heavy price for it, Pakistan has realised this today."
Emphasizing a change in India’s strategic approach, Singh indicated that future discussions will focus solely on terrorism and Pakistan-administered Kashmir.
Expressing a sense of kinship with the people of the region, Singh stated, "I believe that the people of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) are our own, part of our family… We have full faith that they will return to the mainstream of India someday with their self-respect."
Soaring India’s Defence Sector
Highlighting the broader transformation of India’s defence sector, Singh noted that India's defence production has surged from $5.27 billion a decade ago to over $17.6 billion today. The private sector's contribution stands at over $3.86 billion.
Defence exports have also soared to &2.83 billion, reaching over 100 countries.
More than 16,000 MSMEs are now part of the defence supply chain, creating jobs and bolstering the self-reliance mission.
"Today, we are not just making aircraft and missile systems, we are preparing for New Age Warfare Technology," Singh stated.
With the AMCA project and the successes of Operation Sindoor, India is poised to redefine its defence landscape, embracing self-reliance and innovation in military technology.
