The BrahMos has been the crown jewel of India's missile arsenal, with its supersonic speed of nearly 3 Mach, its ability to perform high maneuvers, and fly at a low-altitude trajectory, making it virtually impossible to intercept, as per aviation experts.
A top official linked to India's Ministry of Defence (MoD) has given a shout-out to the scientists and Russian partners who designed the BrahMos missile after the Indo-Russian joint venture proved its mettle during the recent military confrontation between India and Pakistan.
"I want to shout out to the scientists who designed it and developed it, and our Russian partners, because it (BrahMos) performed remarkably during Operation Sindoor," Defence Secretary RK Singh said in an interview with a leading news channel.
Also, Singh stated that advanced and lighter variants of the BrahMos were on the cards to equip India's homegrown warplane, Tejas, with the widely acclaimed missile. At present, the Su-30MKIs are the only combat aircraft in the Indian Air Force's (IAF) fleet that are armed with the BrahMos missiles.
Notably, BrahMos was among a wide variety of Russian military platforms, including the S-400 air defence system, Su-30MKI frontline fighter jets, and the Pechora surface-to-air missile system, that India deployed against Pakistan during its counter-terror operation, which was named Operation Sindoor.
BrahMos in particular sent chills down the spine of Pakistan's armed forces, with the country's Prime Minister, Shehbaz Sharif, confirming that the missile caused significant damage to its prime airbase, Nur Khan in Chaklala, near Rawalpindi.
In addition to Sharif, his aide Rana Sanaullah admitted that Pakistan had only 30 to 45 seconds to react when India fired the BrahMos at the neighbouring nation.
"When India fired BrahMos at Nur Khan airbase, Pakistan's military had only 30-45 seconds to analyse whether the incoming missile may have a nuclear warhead. To decide anything on this in just 30 seconds was a dangerous situation," Sanaullah told a Pakistani news channel earlier this month.
