A bilateral defence pact between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan has once again put the limelight back on the latter's nuclear warheads.
Pakistan's nuclear arsenal will be available to Saudi Arabia in case the Kingdom needs it in case of a potential threat or an attack, under the terms of the new Strategic Mutual Defense Agreement (SMDA) inked between the two Islamic countries, Pakistani Defence Minister Khawaja Asif has said.
"Let me make one point clear about Pakistan's nuclear capability: that capability was established long ago when we conducted tests. Since then, we have forces trained for the battlefield. What we have, and the capabilities we possess, will be made available to (Saudi Arabia) according to this agreement," Asif said in an interview with the country's media outlet Geo TV.
Notably, the SMDA between the two nations, which was signed on Wednesday, states that an attack on Saudi Arabia would be considered an attack on Pakistan, and the same rules would apply if Pakistan came under an attack from a foreign state.
The development is being viewed as a message to Israel, which has been involved in a nearly two-year war with Hamas and carried out airstrikes, attacking its members in Doha, the Qatari capital, sparking panic among Arab nations about their security and over-reliance on the US defence apparatus in the region.
Notably, Israel is believed to be the only nuclear state in the Middle East, though the Jewish state has never acknowledged it.
On the other hand, Pakistan is the only Islamic country to have nuclear weapons.
