Jaishankar's remarks were made at the High-Level Meeting of Like-Minded Global South Countries on the margins of the High-Level Debate of the 80th UN General Assembly, the same day the US President Donald Trump attacked the UN.
India's External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has expressed serious concerns over the erosion of rights of the developing countries in the international system as well as increased attacks on multilateralism.
Jaishankar told the meeting of Global South diplomats that growing uncertainty had become a cause of mounting concern for the world, particularly the Global South comity of nations.
The top Indian diplomat flagged trade volatility, uncertainty in investment flows and interest rates, shocks related to the Covid pandemic, conflicts as well as extreme climate events as some of the major challenges confronting the developing nations.
"Most of all, the rights and expectations of developing countries in the international system – which has been so assiduously developed over many many decades – are today under challenge," Jaishankar stated.
He said that it was only natural that the Global South would turn to multilateralism for solutions.
"Unfortunately, there too we are presented with a very disappointing prospect. The very concept of multilateralism is under attack. International organizations are being rendered ineffective or starved of resources. The building blocks of the contemporary order are starting to come apart. And the cost of delaying much needed reforms is today starkly visible," the Indian Foreign Minister remarked.
Jaishankar backed greater unity among "like-minded" Global South countries to deal with these challenges, while emphasising the importance of a "fair and level-playing field" to do justice to the "developmental concerns of the Global South".
He called on developing nations to back fair and transport economic practises to "democratise production" and enhance "economic security".
Further, Jaishankar also advocated greater "South-South trade" and a stable environment for sustainable and balanced economic interactions, the resolution of conflicts impacting food, fertiliser and energy security as well as creating reliable and resilient supply chains to reduce dependency on any single market or supplier.
Jaishankar proposed five points to achieve these aims, including the use of existing forums to bolster cooperation and solidarity among Global South nations and focussing on climate action initiatives tailored for Global South rather than serving the Global North among others.

"Reform the United Nations and multilateralism as a whole," Jaishankar stressed at the meeting, which took place as Trump ripped apart the UN and multilateralism during his UN address.

Trump criticised the UN for not only not solving problems, but also creating new ones. Under Trump, the US has cut down funding for the UN, withdrawn from the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF, Paris Climate Deal and gone back on US commitments on tariffs at the World Trade Organisation (WTO) among others.
Describing climate change as a "scam", Trump told the UNGA in his first address of the second presidency that the "entire globalist concept of asking successful, industrialised nations to inflict pain on themselves and radically disrupt their entire societies must be rejected completely and totally".
