India to Become a Developed Nation by 2047: Commerce Minister
India, the world's fourth-largest economy, is set to become the third-largest by 2027-28
Indian Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal said that no power in the world can stop the country from becoming a developed nation by 2047, the centenary year of India's independence and a goal set by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
"The country as today has accepted that we are going to become a developed nation by 2047. There's absolutely no power on Earth that will stop us from achieving this status," Goyal said in his address at the ASSOCHAM Annual conference.
Goyal, who is India's top negotiator in its trade talks with the US, with the two democracies involved in discussing a bilateral agreement, appeared to take a jibe at President Donald Trump's administration, stressing that gone are the days when India used to cede ground in "desperation" to ink trade pacts.
"Gone are the days when India would negotiate from a position of weakness. Gone are the days when we would end up doing imbalanced Free-Trade Agreements (FTAs), not really recognising our own strength, but being in a desperation to do an agreement at any cost, often ceding more than we get in return," he underlined.
Interestingly, talks between New Delhi and Washington have moved at a snail's pace over a bilateral trade agreement, especially after the latter imposed 50 tariffs on the former's exports to the US in August.
While the US has continued to deride India, particularly on the matter of its crude imports from Russia, Modi's government has stood its ground, emphasising that the South Asian sovereign state's energy trade is based on
the principle of national security.
