India has welcomed the signing of the Iran-US MoU this month and views the development as an opportunity to explore energy cooperation with Tehran, while also looking to double down on its commitment to Chabahar Port after possible relaxation of US sanctions.
Bihar Governor Lieutenant General (retired) Syed Ata Hasnain and Pabitra Margherita, the Minister of State (MoS) for External Affairs, will represent India at the state funeral of deceased Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei, an Iranian source told Sputnik India.
Hasnain, a former Corp Commander at Indian Army’s Srinagar-headquartered Chinar Corps, is a counter-insurgency expert and hails from a reputed Shia family in Lucknow.
Last week, Iran had extended a formal invitation addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on behalf of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian to attend Khamenei’s funeral.
Khamenei was killed in a joint US-Israeli air strike targeting his residence in Tehran on 28 February. On 5 March, Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri condoled Khamenei’s death on behalf of the Indian government by signing the condolence book at the Iranian Embassy in Delhi.
Prime Minister Modi and President Pezeshkian held two telephone calls to discuss the West Asia situation between March and till the signing of the Iran-US MoU on 17 June.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has also been in regular touch with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Aragchi throughout the US-Iran war. Aragchi even visited Delhi to attend the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in May. Last week, Deputy Secretary for Defence Affairs of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), Ghadir Nezamipour, visited Delhi to attend the BRICS NSAs Meeting chaired by Indian National Security Advisor Ajit Doval.
“Both sides reviewed the ongoing situation in West Asia. They discussed various aspects of the developments that are happening there. They also discussed cooperation under the BRICS platform as also various aspects of India-Iran bilateral ties,” Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal briefed reporters on the India-Iran talks held on the margins of the NSAs meeting.
The state funeral and related events will commence on 4 July at Imam Khomeini Grand Mosalla in Tehran, according to Iranian state media. Funeral processions are scheduled to take place in the Iranian capital city on 6 July and in Qom on 7 July. Khamenei will be buried at the Imam Reza Shrine in Mashhad on 9 July.

The state media reported that a number of foreign dignitaries from neighbouring and friendly nations will be attending the funeral proceedings, which include delegations from Russia, China as well as neighbouring countries.
