Indonesia Agreement Fuels Overseas Demand for India's Astra Missile

Following a deal between India and Indonesia for the former's beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile (BVRAAM) Astra earlier this month, six more nations, including Armenia and Saudi Arabia, have shown interest in the South Asian nation's weapon system.
Growing international interest in India's Astra missile is the result of a combination of operational credibility, improving technology, and changing geopolitical dynamics, an expert has said.

"First, the missile represents India's maturing indigenous defence-industrial base. Countries are increasingly looking to diversify away from traditional suppliers such as the US, Russia, and China, either due to geopolitical risks, sanctions, or supply chain uncertainties. Astra offers an alternative from a country perceived as a reliable and politically neutral defence partner," Harpreet Sidhu, a defence analyst with the London-based military intelligence firm GlobalData, told Sputnik India.

Second, Astra has evolved significantly through successive variants. The current Astra Mk1 provides an engagement range of around 110 km under favourable launch conditions, while the Mk2 under development is expected to exceed 150 km. India is also pursuing longer-range variants, demonstrating a clear roadmap for future capability growth, he added.

Third, the missile has been integrated with multiple fighter platforms, including the Su-30MKI and Tejas, with integration planned for additional aircraft. This flexibility makes it attractive for export customers operating diverse fleets, the observer reckoned.

"If compared with China's PL-15, Astra and PL-15 occupy different stages of technological maturity. The PL-15 is generally assessed to have a longer engagement range — often estimated between 200 km and 300 km for domestic variants — and reportedly uses an advanced active radar seeker supported by two-way datalink guidance. It is designed specifically to challenge Western long-range air-to-air missiles," Sidhu highlighted.

However, range alone does not determine combat effectiveness. The actual 'no-escape zone,' seeker performance under electronic warfare conditions, resistance to jamming, target updates via datalink, and integration with airborne early warning aircraft and fighter radars are equally important. Much of the PL-15's true performance remains based on open-source estimates rather than independently verified combat data, he stressed.

Astra may not currently match the PL-15's claimed maximum range, but it offers a balanced combination of capability, affordability, domestic production, and export potential. For many air forces, this makes Astra a highly competitive option, particularly when lifecycle support and political reliability are considered alongside technical specifications, the military commentator underscored.

Furthermore, beyond-visual-range missiles have become one of the defining capabilities of modern air combat because the nature of aerial warfare has fundamentally changed, Sidhu remarked.

Today's fighter aircraft rarely rely on visual dogfights. Instead, they operate as part of an integrated network that includes airborne early warning aircraft, ground-based radars, satellites, electronic warfare assets, and secure data links. In this environment, detecting, tracking, and engaging an opponent before being detected yourself provides a decisive tactical advantage, he emphasised.

Modern BVR missiles enable aircraft to engage hostile fighters well beyond visual range while receiving mid-course target updates through datalinks. This significantly increases engagement flexibility and allows pilots to react to changing battlefield conditions in real time, the defence pundit explained.
"Conflicts such as the Russia-Ukraine war and recent India-Pakistan aerial engagements have reinforced the importance of long-range air combat, electronic warfare, sensor fusion, and missile performance. Air superiority today depends as much on the effectiveness of sensors, networking, and missile technology as it does on the aircraft itself," Sidhu underlined.
That said, BVR missiles are not standalone game-changers. Their effectiveness depends on the broader combat ecosystem. A long-range missile launched without reliable target detection, secure communications, electronic warfare protection, and pilot training may fail to achieve its intended effect, he pointed out.

In the era of network-centric warfare, the true game-changer is the integration of advanced sensors, data fusion, electronic warfare, and long-range precision weapons into a single combat system. BVR missiles are among the most critical components of that system, making them a strategic priority for air forces worldwide, the aviation specialist asserted.

Meanwhile, Commodore (Retd) Seshadri Vasan believes that Astra is a proven combat system now after it was successfully deployed against Pakistan during Operation Sindoor last year. Moreover, it is undergoing continuous upgrades with the Mark 1, Mark 2 and Mark 3 catering to different ranges. The Mark 1, which is on the table for exports, has a range of about 110-120 kilometres, while the underdevelopment Mark 2 and Mark 3 will have a range of 160 km and close to 300 km, respectively.
"So obviously, the family of Astra would be very attractive to those who would like to protect their airspace and also be in a position to take on targets beyond visual ranges," Vasan said in an interview with Sputnik India.
But Astra's biggest plus is that it can be integrated onto a wide variety of fighter jets, the Rafale, Tejas or the Sukhoi, the Indian Navy veteran concluded.
