Working to Develop Relations With China Once Again: Indian Commerce Minister
Sino-India relations are currently experiencing a phase of warmth following a thaw in 2024 after Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed on détente at the BRICS Summit.
India is working to rebuild its ties with China following a period of simmering tensions for over five years, the nation's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday.
"We are open to all countries around the world as long as we get a fair deal, as long as we ensure continuity in the engagement, and as long as the geopolitical situation does not deteriorate. I think we had some concerns in the past. We are working to develop relations with China once again, but the last word has not yet been scripted on this journey," Goyal said during the Bloomberg New Economy event in Delhi.
His comments came
in response to a question about India's readiness for establishing joint ventures with China.
China is India's second-largest trading partner after the US. During the last financial year, trade between India and China grew 7.9% to $127.7 billion from $118.39 billion in 2024-25.
More importantly, India's exports to China rose by over 36% to $19.47 billion in 2025-26 from $14.25 billion in the previous fiscal year.
