AI may lead to more employment opportunities in India amid job cuts across sectors in several Multi-National Companies (MNCs) as the technology requires the global workforce to acquire new skills, the country's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.Goyal's comments are significant given that this would reverse a trend seen across the world at present. After all, MNCs are reshaping and consolidating roles, often resulting in headcount reduction at their offices.According to a report, as many as 120,000 layoffs were linked to AI in the US in the first nine months of 2026. However, the minister acknowledged that the AI era could bring short-term uncertainty in workplaces.

AI May Increase Jobs in India: Industry Minister
13:45 15.10.2026 (Updated: 17:11 15.10.2026) The advent of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has forced global business houses, especially large technology companies, including Google, to lay off employees, severely impacting the job market worldwide.
AI may lead to more employment opportunities in India amid job cuts across sectors in several Multi-National Companies (MNCs) as the technology requires the global workforce to acquire new skills, the country's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Thursday.
"I think artificial intelligence will not reduce jobs. It may actually increase the number of jobs available for our young Indian brothers and sisters," he said during a public event at the prestigious Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) in Delhi.
Goyal's comments are significant given that this would
reverse a trend seen across the world at present. After all, MNCs are reshaping and consolidating roles, often resulting in headcount reduction at their offices.
According to a report, as many as 120,000 layoffs were linked to AI in the US in the first nine months of 2026.
However, the minister acknowledged that the AI era could bring short-term uncertainty in workplaces.
"There may be uncertainty for a short period of time as jobs get redesigned, as we train and skill young India to become developers of agents, to become masters of cybersecurity," Goyal said.
