Since former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan lost power through a no-confidence vote in April 2022, he has continuously demanded early elections to be held in the country.
In yet another attempt to put pressure on the Shehbaz Sharif government to call early elections, ex-Pakistan premier Imran Khan has recently announced that his Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party's jail bharo (court arrest) movement will begin from Lahore next Wednesday.
"They are scaring us from jails. We are going to fulfill their desire [to make arrests]. We will fill the jails and they [the incumbent government] will be left with no space in jails [to keep the party workers]," the cricketer-turned-politician said in a TV broadcast on Friday.
"I am announcing, God willing, my ‘Jail Bharo Tehreek’ from Wednesday. I am telling my entire party today to prepare for the movement," Khan added.
According to the 1992 Cricket World Cup winning captain, the "court arrest" movement would uproot the government headed by Sharif because the public support was with him.
He further alleged that the present government of Pakistan was an "imported" one as it came to power in the country via an "auction" and not through a popular vote.
Khan mentioned that members of the PTI would hold protests across the country and would go to police stations to court their arrests, highlighting the deteriorating situation with law and order in Pakistan.
However, the PTI chief didn't disclose the name of the top PTI politicians who will lead the march. Neither Khan revealed whether he would join the PTI cadres in courting arrest as he was still recovering from gun wounds he suffered during an assassination attempt during an antigovernment protest in November 2022.
