Iran has been under harsh US-imposed sanctions for nearly two decades for pursuing its peaceful nuclear program, which Washington claims is a veil for developing nuclear weapons.
Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has stated that the "global policy" to alienate Tehran has failed as the country is showing an active presence in organizations of repute, like BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), state media IRNA reported on Wednesday.
The reference to "global policy" by Amirabdollahian seemed to have been directed at arch-enemy the United States and its Western allies, given that Tehran has been under a sanctions regime since the Iranian Revolution of 1979.

"Iran's active presence in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), in the Eurasian Economic Union, and recently in BRICS, shows the global policy of isolating Iran has failed", Amirabdollahian said. "We strongly oppose unilateralism, and at the same time, make the most out of the existing opportunities within the framework of multilateralism. Moreover, Iran enjoys a principal status in the region geopolitically, geo-economically, and geo-strategically".

The latest round of US restrictions levied on Iran, targeting the nation's oil and petrochemical sales came in March 2023.

The move was an addition to the embargoes former US President Donald Trump put on Iran by introducing the "Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act" (CAATSA), passed by the US Congress during his presidency from 2017 to 2021.

CAATSA primarily cover a military, trade, economic and scientific areas. However, the noose has been tightened around Iran in recent years, with its financial sector becoming one of the recent victims of the US-led sanctions.

However, Iran's prominence, particularly in Asia, has been growing exponentially: for example, recently, Indonesia signed a preferential trade agreement (PTA) with Iran in defiance of Western sanctions.

Additionally, Iran has been invited to international groupings like the SCO and BRICS on a regular basis.

Last week, Amirabdollahian attended the BRICS Foreign Ministers' meeting held in Cape Town, hosted by his South African counterpart Dr Naledi Pandor.
