Tehran and Washington have been sworn enemies since 1979 when dozens of American diplomats were held hostage by armed Iranian students after the Islamic Revolution there.
Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi tore into the US-led global order, criticizing it for being "hegemonic" because Washington continuously interferes in the internal matters of independent countries, state media IRNA reported on Wednesday.
Raisi's remarks came while he was addressing university students in Venezuela's Caracas where he is at present on an official visit.

"The US-led hegemonic system interferes in the internal affairs of independent countries, as an example," Raisi said. "The Islamic Republic of Iran is against any war and military intervention. Any country that wants to live independently is sanctioned and threatened by the hegemony-seeking system."

Raisi's comments were made in the context of American meddling in the internal affairs of Venezuela, as well as Western sanctions slapped on Iran and its close ally Russia.

Since the start of the 21st century, the US has twice attempted to throw out the democratically elected governments of Venezuela - specifically the presidents Hugo Chavez and Nicolas Maduro, who is the country's leader at present.
The Donald Trump administration even refused to recognise Maduro as the legitimate head of Venezuela in 2019.
Similarly, Tehran has borne the brunt of American restrictions, particularly since 2017 when then-US President Donald Trump decided to exit from a nuclear deal that was inked by the previous administration of Barack Obama.
Under the restrictions, there is a complete embargo on US firms having dealings with Iranian companies. Furthermore, the sanctions cover the Middle East country's banking, oil, trade, military and scientific sectors.
The West also imposed harsh economic sanctions on Moscow after Russia launched its special operation in Ukraine last February.
Russia was also thrown out of the global "SWIFT" financial system, the prime global payment gateway, and had its $300Bln central bank assets frozen in Western nations.
