Weeks after an Indian Air Force detachment was ambushed by militants in Jammu, nine civilians lost their lives when the bus carrying them fell into a gorge after being fired on.
The head of India's Jammu and Kashmir has condemned attempts by terrorists to create anarchy in the region.
Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, the senior most administrator in J&K, called a recent militant attack in the Reasi district as a "nefarious" attempt to bring Jammu region into turmoil.
Nine pilgrims were killed and over 30 were severely injured on Sunday night when their bus fell into a gorge after coming under fire from unidentified militants. The pilgrims were on their way to the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu.

"This is a nefarious attempt to bring Jammu region into turmoil. This design will be defeated," Sinha told reporters on Monday. "Those responsible will not be spared".

Meantime, a senior police officer speaking to Sputnik on condition of anonymity said the bus driver appeared to have lost control of the vehicle.
"A massive cordon and search operation has been launched," the officer said. "Our suspicion is that militants belong to the same group operating in the Pir Panjal Mountain range for the last two to three years".
In addition Lieutenant Governor Sinha emphasized that his priority is to ensure that those injured in the incident are saved. The administration announced ex-gratia payments of around $120,00 family members of those killed in the incident and $600 for the injured.
Furthermore, several politicians, both in Kashmir and in New Delhi, issued statements in the aftermath of the attack.

"Deeply pained by the incident of the attack on pilgrims in Reasi, J&K. Spoke to the Lieutenant Governor and the DGP (Director General of Police), J&K, and inquired about the incident," Amit Shah, Federal Minister for Home Affairs, wrote on X (formerly Twitter). "The culprits of this dastardly attack will not be spared and will face the wrath of the law. The local administration is working on a war footing to provide immediate medical attention".

Likewise, former state chiefs of J&K Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti issued statements of condemnation.
However, the anti-India insurgency erupted from the Kashmir valley in the 1980s and spread across the region, including to Jammu. While revolt is in decline, it continues in Kashmir.
Nevertheless, the Jammu region remained relatively peaceful, but has witnessed an uptick in militant attacks on security forces and civilians in the last two years.
For instance, militants carried out four high-causality ambush attacks last year, resulting in the killing of 19 soldiers — including special force commandoes of the Indian army.
At the same time, seven civilians were killed in a single attack carried out by militants in Dangri village of Rajouri district in 2023.
