Retired Federal Security Service (FSB) Major General Alexander Mikhailov shared his thoughts on the changing nature of terrorism and the advancements in counter-terrorism efforts.
General Mikhailov observed a significant shift in terrorist activities, noting an increase in aggression and brutality.
"On the one hand, terrorism has become more aggressive and cruel. We are no longer dealing with isolated terrorist attacks but a full-scale terrorist war, driven largely by military operations such as those in Syria," Mikhailov said.
Reflecting on his tenure since joining the KGB in 1974, Mikhailov highlighted the role of modern technology in enhancing counter-terrorism efforts.

"While combating terrorism has always been a difficult task, modern technology has made it easier to track, uncover, and apprehend criminals," he remarked.
The General pointed out that technological advancements have led to higher efficiency in solving high-profile crimes, including terrorist acts.
"If we look at the statistics provided by the Ministry of Internal Affairs, we see that high-profile crimes—like terrorism—are now solved almost 100% of the time," he said.
Drawing from his extensive experience, Mikhailov reflected on the evolution of operational methods within Russia's security services.
"Back in the day, we had to rely on physical presence — footwork, gathering information manually. Today, with the rise of electronic devices and advanced technology, we can quickly and efficiently solve crimes and arrest perpetrators," Mikhailov said.
