In a tit-for-tat move, India on Wednesday extended the ban on Pakistani aircraft from entering its airspace till 24 August, according to the latest notice to airmen (NOTAM) by the country's aviation regulator. This NOTAM is effective till 23:59 hours Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) on August 23, meaning it will be applicable till 05:30 hours Indian Standard Time (IST) on August 24.It is worth noting that Pakistan issued a NOTAM last week, shutting its airspace for Indian airlines and aircraft for the same period announced by India today.Pakistani aviation authorities closed their airspace for Indian flights on April 24 before India responded with an airspace closure for Pakistani airlines and aircraft on April 30.The development came in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack in the resort town of Pahalgam in Jammu & Kashmir on April 22, which Indian security agencies blamed on cross-border terrorists from Pakistan.Subsequently, India launched Operation Sindoor during the intervening night of May 6-7.Following the Indian airstrikes, Pakistan retaliated with a series of swarm drone and missile attacks, which were all repelled, thanks to India's Russian-origin S-400 air defence system and the indigenous Akashteer platform.
