Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has highlighted the importance of energy cooperation with Russia in his conversations with First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to an Indian readout on Friday. The assertion by India to continue importing Russian oil comes amid US threats to go ahead with the imposition of 25% additional tariff on India over the purchase of Russian crude. The tariff is scheduled to kick in from 27 August. White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro claimed on Thursday that India had a "role in the Ukraine conflict", describing Indian imports of Russian crude as a "refining profiteering scheme" for Big Oil.He said that India was perplexed by the US logic on Russian oil."Americans have said for the last few years that we should do everything to stabilise the world energy market, including buying oil from Russia," Jaishankar said, while pointing to American U-turn on the matter."Both sides are interested in implementing joint energy production projects in the Russian Far East and the Russian Arctic shelf, among other sites. The parties highly appreciated the prospects of expanding partnership in the field of peaceful nuclear energy and hydrocarbons production," a Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) readout said.In spite of US threats, India ramped up its Russian oil imports, sourcing 2 million barrels per day (bpd) in the first 15 days of August, according to data by Kpler.Overall, Russia continued to remain India's top crude supplier in the first half of 2025.

India Tells Russia to Sustain Oil Trade Despite US Tariff Threat
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar concluded his eventful three-day visit to Moscow on Thursday after a call on President Vladimir Putin at the Kremlin.
Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar has highlighted the importance of energy cooperation with Russia in his conversations with First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to an Indian readout on Friday.
“Importance of sustaining energy cooperation through trade and investments was highlighted”, the statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said. Jaishankar and Manturov
co-chaired the 26th Session of the India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technological and Cultural Cooperation (IRIGC-TEC) meeting on 20 August.
The assertion by India to continue importing Russian oil comes amid US threats to go ahead with the imposition of 25% additional tariff on India over the purchase of Russian crude. The tariff is scheduled to kick in from 27 August. White House Trade Advisor Peter Navarro claimed on Thursday that India had a "role in the Ukraine conflict", describing Indian imports of Russian crude as a "refining profiteering scheme" for Big Oil.
Meanwhile, at a joint press statement with Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday, Jaishankar reiterated the importance of Russian oil imports for India.
He said that India was perplexed by the US logic on Russian oil.
"Americans have said for the last few years that we should do everything to
stabilise the world energy market, including buying oil from Russia," Jaishankar said, while pointing to American U-turn on the matter.
During the Lavrov-Jaishankar talks, the Russian Foreign Minister told his Indian guest that "cooperation in the hydrocarbon sector and
Russian oil shipments to the Indian market are making wide strides".
"Both sides are interested in implementing joint energy production projects in the Russian Far East and the Russian Arctic shelf, among other sites. The parties highly appreciated the prospects of expanding partnership in the field of peaceful nuclear energy and hydrocarbons production," a Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) readout said.
In spite of US threats, India ramped up its Russian oil imports, sourcing 2 million barrels per day (bpd) in the first 15 days of August, according to data by Kpler.
Overall, Russia continued to remain India's top crude supplier in the first half of 2025.
