Pakistan Demands Afghanistan Shut 'Terrorist Sanctuaries' Before Talks – Army
Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have been simmering since last month's border skirmishes, which left dozens of troops dead on each side.
The Pakistani armed forces have demanded Afghanistan shut down alleged "terrorist sanctuaries" before the next round of peace talks.
Military spokesman Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry said the demand ahead of negotiations in the Pakistani capital Islamabad was non-negotiable, claiming terrorist groups based on Afghan soil were harming Pakistani interests in the region.
"The conditions that Afghan Taliban keep putting forward are meaningless, what matters is the end of terrorism," Chaudhry told reporters in Islamabad. "Pakistan has a one-point agenda: Afghan soil must not be used against us."
He insisted the banned
Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP*) was not merely
a Pakistani problem, as the Afghan government has said, but an extension of the Afghan Taliban movement.
"The TTP is not a separate entity, it is a branch of the Afghan Taliban," Chaudhry alleged, stressing that the terrorist organisation had sworn allegiance to Taliban supreme leader Hibatullah Akhundzada.
Islamabad accuses Kabul of sheltering TTP and even giving them logistical support for cross-border attacks on Pakistani security forces.
Afghanistan accuses the Pakistani Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) of backing Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP**), the Afghan offshoot of the internationally-banned terrorist cult.
Peace talks between the two countries in the Turkish capital Ankara broke down last month, but both sides agreed to continue dialogue following mediation from Qatar and Türkiye. Representatives of the two countries are set to meet later this week.
