With Tel Aviv still trying to come to terms with a stunning Hamas assault, a former Israeli intelligence official said that the country did not foresee the attack as coming.
A former head of the intelligence division in Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office has said that the Jewish state's military leadership was still investigating the border breach by Hamas fighters before adding that it would take weeks to ascertain how Hamas fighters managed to enter the country's territory with Israel being caught unaware.
The remarks of Dr. Eyal Pinko, who served in the Israeli Navy for 25 years, including as the chief of its intelligence wing, come at a time when hostilities between Tel Aviv and the Palestine military movement Hamas have risen to unparalleled heights with the overall death count in the conflict crossing the 4,000 mark on Thursday.
"Nobody in Israel actually knows if it was an intelligence failure as no analysis or investigation has been done over the attack until now," he told Sputnik India on Thursday.
But Pinko noted that he could make a few assumptions regarding what could have happened that led to this tragedy.

Possible Reasons Behind Successful Hamas Assault on Israel

He presumed that there were no alerts from intelligence-gathering officials of Israel.
Second, the former Israel Defense Force officer believed that data analysts tasked with decoding the signs of suspicious activity from Israel's enemies did not make a proper assessment of such a large-scale attack from Hamas.
He suggested that whatever happened, happened in the garb of "peace", given that Israel allowed Qatari investment into Gaza, and permitted the supply of water, and electricity for their economic well-being.
"Last week, before the Hamas attack, the head of the Israeli military said that the country wasn't facing any threat from Hamas because it was on the path of peace. In this context, Nobody yet knows if it was a total intelligence failure, but it might be like that," Pinko expressed.

Hamas' Great Game of Deception

According to him, ahead of the attack, Hamas played a long game of deception, showing that they were toward peace to penetrate Israel's borders in the wee hours of Saturday morning when the whole country was celebrating the festival of Sabbath.
"Nobody knows yet how the wall collapsed and how Hamas managed to do it without an appropriate combat operation. Israel is still trying to come to terms with the tragedy but fighting between Hamas fighters and IDF is still on. It will probably take a few more days to understand how Hamas started this attack on Israel," Pinko commented.

Israeli Ground Invasion of Gaza Inevitable

With Hamas holding approximately 150 people hostage, Israel is reportedly preparing a ground invasion which Netanyahu has stated will turn the Gaza-based hardline Islamic group's sites into "rubble".
In this light, Pinko underlined that Israel was now trying to contain the situation, fortifying the wall so that such a breach doesn't happen in the future.
Additionally, the Israeli Air Force is doing everything in its capacity to destroy the underground tunnels where the Hamas leadership hides in Gaza.

Tel Aviv Not Interested in Escalating the Conflict in the North

Pinko, however, acknowledged that Israel was trying to avoid any escalation up in the north from Syria and Lebanon by Hezbollah and Iranian forces over there.
He highlighted that Israel was also dealing with another front, the Israeli Arab society, which in some places celebrated Hamas' success.
"The Israeli security forces even dealt with some terror attempts to kill civilians, soldiers, and policemen by Arab Israelis," the ex-Israeli military officer disclosed.

No Security System in the World Guarantees 100 Percent Success

About the implications for Israel's security, given that Hamas found a way past the country's high-tech Iron Dome system and even breached the iron wall along the Gaza border, Pinko replied that every defense system has its percentage of success.
He mentioned that no security system in the world guarantees a 100 percent success rate. It means that there is a probability that a defense system like the Iron Dome will not be able to defend against all enemy strikes.
He noted that Hamas fired more than 6,000 rockets into Israel. However, only a few hit targets, and as per my analysis, the Iron Dome neutralized approximately 97 percent of projectiles that were sent into Israel.
"Without this system, Hamas would have caused a "crazy" level of destruction in Israeli cities," Pinko concluded.
