Indonesia's induction into BRICS increases the geographical and economic leverage of the bloc which is fast emerging as one of the most powerful voices of the developing world, experts have said.According to Dr. Rajan Kumar, a professor of international relations at India's prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the inclusion of Indonesia is another milestone for BRICS and expands the geographical and economic influence of the organisation in Asia.Indonesia, like other BRICS states, has maintained a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war and it refused to join the Western sanctions against Russia, the academic underlined.Despite being a member of the ASEAN, which traditionally has closer ties with the West, Indonesia decided to join BRICS. This will raise concerns in the West which is already concerned about the expanding influence of a non-Western organisation, he added.Meanwhile, Anak Agung Banyu Perwita, an Indonesian geopolitical pundit who is a faculty member at the Jakarta-based Republic of Indonesia Defense University, pointed out that Indonesia is the biggest country in Southeast Asia not only in terms of population, GDP, size, and potential markets.By joining BRICS, Indonesia will also be able to expand into the potential market of BRICS. Indonesia's membership in BRICS will also provide a significant economic platform for advancing its key development priorities across the Global South, he stressed.Besides, it will boost South-South economic cooperation, meaning BRICS will assist in strengthening the economy of almost 50 percent of the global population, Perwita assessed. On the other hand, Ambassador (Retd.) Anil Trigunayat, a distinguished fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), thinks that BRICS Plus represents a non-Western model where some of the top economies, like India, China, Russia, and Brazil are already being represented.Furthermore, all major countries are looking for stakes in alternate groups to ensure their national interests through strategic autonomy, he stated.

What Does Indonesia's Full Membership Mean For BRICS?
Indonesia, the world's most populous Muslim state, became the 11th full member of BRICS, as announced by Brazil, the current chair of the powerful geo-economic group.
Indonesia's induction into BRICS increases the geographical and economic leverage of the bloc which is fast emerging as one of the most powerful voices of the developing world, experts have said.
According to
Dr. Rajan Kumar, a professor of international relations at India's prestigious
Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), the inclusion of Indonesia is
another milestone for BRICS and expands the geographical and economic influence of the organisation in Asia.
"Indonesia has the most powerful economy of ASEAN and its membership will enhance the bargaining power of BRICS. As a post-colonial state, it shares the vision of BRICS and supports the idea of a multipolar world," Kumar told Sputnik India.
Indonesia, like other BRICS states, has maintained a neutral stance on the Russia-Ukraine war and it refused to join the Western sanctions against Russia, the academic underlined.
Despite being a member of the ASEAN, which traditionally has closer ties with the West, Indonesia decided to join BRICS. This will raise concerns in the West which is already concerned about the expanding influence of a
non-Western organisation, he added.
"Like other democracies of the Global South, Indonesia seeks to pursue a balanced foreign policy. Indonesia's membership will encourage several other countries of the Global South to join the organisation. This will worry the West which is concerned about the rising influence of BRICS in financial and geopolitical matters," Kumar reckoned.
Meanwhile, Anak Agung Banyu Perwita, an Indonesian geopolitical pundit who is a faculty member at the Jakarta-based Republic of Indonesia Defense University, pointed out that Indonesia is the biggest country in Southeast Asia not only in terms of population, GDP, size, and potential markets.
By joining BRICS, Indonesia will also be able to expand into the potential market of BRICS. Indonesia's membership in BRICS will also
provide a significant economic platform for advancing its key development priorities across the Global South, he stressed.
Besides, it will boost South-South economic cooperation, meaning BRICS will assist in strengthening the economy of almost 50 percent of the global population, Perwita assessed.
"Additionally, ASEAN, of which Indonesia is an important member, will benefit from establishing stronger linkages with advanced economies, their regional blocs, and development institutions. In other words, it will match the slogan of 'ASEAN Centrality'. ASEAN is an example of the most advanced regional groupings in the world. Hence, the position of ASEAN will gain more significance not only in terms of the changing geo-economy landscape but also in terms of geopolitics and geostrategic positioning after Jakarta's BRICS membership," the strategic affairs commentator opined.
On the other hand, Ambassador (Retd.) Anil Trigunayat, a distinguished fellow at the Vivekananda International Foundation (VIF), thinks that BRICS Plus represents a non-Western model where some of the top economies, like India, China, Russia, and Brazil are already being represented.
Furthermore, all major countries are looking for
stakes in alternate groups to ensure their national interests through strategic autonomy, he stated.
"Indonesia is also a vibrant large economy and several ASEAN countries hope to be full members of an expanded BRICS. In the prevailing geo-economic dynamics it provides them a certain edge," Trigunayat, an ex-Indian High Commissioner to Jordan, Libya, and Malta, concluded.
