The Taliban* authorities have described India as a "pivotal regional player" and stressed the "historical significance" of India-Afghanistan relations, according to an Afghan readout.
Indian External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar on Thursday held his maiden telephone call with Acting Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Indian diplomat posted om X.

Jaishankar said that India "deeply appreciated" the Taliban's condemnation of the Pahalgam terrorist attack on 22 April, which left 25 Indians and one Nepalese citizen dead.

In response to the terrorist attack claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), the Indian tri-service launched Operation Sindoor, with the Indian Air Force (IAF) striking terror infrastructure and hideouts across Pakistan on 7 May.
"Welcomed his firm rejection of recent attempts to create distrust between India and Afghanistan through false and baseless reports," Jaishankar said.
During an Indian briefing on Operation Sindoor last week, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had blasted Pakistan for a "completely ludicrous claim" that India struck targets in Afghanistan.
In his call with Muttaqi, Jaishankar also stressed on India's "traditional friendship" with the Afghan people and providing development assistance to the war-torn nation.
A readout from the interim Afghan authorities said that both the diplomats discussed ways to bolster bilateral relations, trade, and diplomatic ties.
Muttaqi called for maintaining the "positive momentum" in India-Afghanistan relations through a "balanced approach".
The Afghan diplomat requested Jaishankar to streamline visas for Afghan businessmen and patients wanting to visit India. He also called for the release and repatriation of Afghan nationals in Indian prisons, according to the readout.
For his part, Jaishankar assured Muttaqi of an "expedited resolution of prisoner cases and facilitated visa procedures".

"Both officials also emphasized the progress of the Chabahar Port development," the Afghan readout stated.

There has been a perciple uptick in diplomatic exchanges between India and the Taliban authorities this year. In January, Foreign Secretary Misri met Muttaqi in Dubai, where the Indian side expressed an interest in getting engaged in developmental projects in the country.
Last month, senior Indian diplomat Anand Prakash, Secretary at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) and incharge of the PAI (Pakistan, Afghanistan and India Division), met Muttaqi during a visit to Kabul.
