The India-Russia defence meeting took place ahead of National Security Advisor's (NSA) Ajit Doval likely visit to Moscow this week.
Russia's Deputy Defence Minister Colonel General Aleksandr Fomin held a meeting with Indian Ambassador to Moscow, Vinay Kumar, according to a statement by the Russian Defence Ministry on Tuesday.
"During the talks, the sides discussed topical issues of bilateral cooperation in the defence sphere, confirming the focus on further strengthening the specialised cooperation in the form of a particularly privileged strategic partnership," the Russian statement said.
It noted that the meeting took place in a "warm and friendly atmosphere", in line with the tradition of India-Russia ties.
The India-Russia ties have come under renewed attack by Washington, with the US government last week stating that New Delhi bought a "vast majority" of its military equipment from Russia. The US has threatened to impose a 25% tariff and a "penalty" on India for buying Russian oil and re-selling the refined products to other countries.
US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum (USISPF) Leadership Summit in June that India-Russia defence cooperation was rubbing the US the "wrong way".
New Delhi has consistently pushed back against this criticism of India-Russia ties by the US.
Ministry of External Affairs Spokesman Randhir Jaiswal told a media briefing in New Delhi last week that India-Russia ties stand on their own merit, while responding to a question about attacks on India-Russia relations by the Trump administration.
"Our ties with any country or all the ties that we have with various countries, they have, they stand on their own merit and they should not be seen from the prism of a third country. As far as India-Russia relations are concerned, we have a steady and time-tested partnership," Jaiswal said.
Importantly, Russian defence systems like S-400 Surface-to-air missiles and Indo-Russian Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles played a key role in the recent India-Pakistan conflict from 7-10 May, as acknowledged by the Indian leadership.
Meanwhile, India said this week that it is being unjustly targetted by the US and EU on the issue of Russian oil imports.
