Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi is visiting New Delhi for the first time since the India-China disengagement pact last October, marking a steady improvement in bilateral ties. Both the nations have also expressed serious concerns over US tariffs.
External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi discussed economic and trade issues, bilateral matters as well as the prevailing global situation during their talks in New Delhi on Monday evening.
During his opening remarks at the delegation-level meeting, Jaishankar emphasised that it was critical to maintain and bolster stability in the global economy amid the prevailing international situation.

"When the world’s two largest nations meet, it is natural that the international situation will be discussed. We seek a fair, balanced and multi-polar world order, including a multi-polar Asia. Reformed multilateralism is also the call of the day," Jaishankar underscored during the meeting.

The India-China talks are taking place amid an onslaught of US tariffs on both the countries, with India facing a 25% tariff on its imports entering the US, with an additional 25% tariff over Russian oil imports expected to kick in on 27 August. While the US administration issued an Executive Order last week to pause further tariffs on China till 10 November, Chinese imports entering the US are still being subjected to a 30% tariff. The US ranks as the biggest trading and export partner of both India and China.
The Indian top diplomat stated that both the Asian neighbours were looking to "move ahead" following a difficult period in the relationship, a reference to the Ladakh border standoff which began in 2020 and the disengagement pact was agreed upon between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping at their meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit in Kazan last October.

"In that endeavour, we must be guided by the three mutuals - mutual respect, sensitivity and interest. Differences must not become disputes, nor competition conflict," the EAM told his Chinese counterpart.

Jaishankar said that moving ahead in the bilateral relationship required a "candid and constructive approach" from both sides.

Further, he expressed confidence that India and China could build a "stable, cooperative and forward-looking relationship" to serve each others' interests and address respective concerns.

"You will of course be discussing border issues with our Special Representative, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval, tomorrow. This is very important because the basis for any positive momentum in our ties is the ability to jointly maintain peace and tranquility in the border areas. It is also essential that the de-escalation process move forward," Jaishankar told Wang.
The two top diplomats also discussed people-to-people contacts, pilgrimages, river data sharing, border trade, connectivity and bilateral exchanges during their meeting.
"The fight against terrorism in all its forms and manifestations is another major priority," Jaishankar stated.
For his part, Wang expressed hope that India and China could "provide the most needed certainty to Asia and the world".
"We shared confidence to dispel interference, expand cooperation and to further consolidate the momentum of improvement development of China-India relations..." the Politburo Member said.
The main focus of Wang Yi's two-day India visit is the 24th round of the Special Representatives' (SR) Talks on the India-China boundary question, to be co-chaired by NSA Doval, at the Hyderabad House on Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday evening, the Chinese delegate will call on Prime Minister Modi at his official residence in New Delhi, a privilege that in the past has only been reserved for a few top diplomats. PM Modi is scheduled to visit the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin on 31 August-1 September.
The Chinese Foreign Minister is scheduled to depart for Pakistan from New Delhi on Wednesday morning.
